The Basics of Gum Disease

Lufkin TX Bleeding GumsWhen you hear the word “disease” it can strike fear in you. Gum disease (or periodontal disease) is a common condition in people of all ages. It happens when plaque and bacteria build up in the mouth, causing inflammation in the gums. This can lead to bleeding, sensitivity, gum recession, and bad breath. Gum Disease is usually caused by poor oral care, smoking, changing in hormones, medications and even genetics, but it’s preventable and highly treatable when addressed early.

If your dentist doesn’t treat it quickly, gum disease can progress into more serious periodontitis – which could eventually lead to tooth loss. To prevent gum disease and protect the health of your mouth:

  •  Brush twice a day
  • Get in the habit of flossing every day
  • Schedule regular check-ups with your dentist every six months
  • Steer clear of food and drinks that are high in sugars and carbs – they promote bacteria and plaque in the mouth
  • Invest in a tongue scraper to help remove bacteria that gets trapped on the tongue
  • Eat healthy, immune-boosting foods (think whole fruits, vegetables, and proteins) that help your body fight off bacteria and infections
  • Drink water throughout the day to keep your saliva production up and to help continually rinse your mouth
